The achievements of this world do not surpass the achievement of the kingdom of heaven

When the Lord Jesus forewarned the Church in Laodicea (in one of the letters of Revelation), He showed just how much the achievements of this world do not surpass, nor equal to the achievement of the kingdom of heaven.

In the case of the church in Laodicea – it apparently had “everything”!!!

In fact, we have even been to Laodicea and historians have actually proven that the city was prosperous and wealthy. The people of Laodicea were proud of their gains in knowledge in the field of ophthalmology, and they even produced a type of eye drop. At that time, the city was also the capital of fashion because it produced a dark-coloured wool which was very valuable.

However, the Lord Jesus made a strong statement concerning the things they thought they had:

“Because you say, ‘I am rich, have become wealthy, and have need of nothing’ – and do not know that you are WRETCHED, MISERABLE, POOR, BLIND, and NAKED.” Revelation 3:17

Jesus showed them that they actually had NOTHING, though they thought they did. The most striking moment comes after, in the form of advice:

“I counsel you to BUY from Me gold refined in the fire, that YOU MAY BE RICH; and white garments, that you may be CLOTHED, that the shame of your nakedness may not be revealed; and anoint your eyes with eye salve, that you may SEE.” Revelation 3:18

Jesus advised that they make a PURCHASE! He proposed a NEGOTIATION.

Jesus did not say, “We are in the grace. I counsel you to RECEIVE, for I give to you.” NO!!! He said, “BUY.”

And so, we can understand this as:

* GOLD REFINED IN THE FIRE – Surrender.
* WHITE GARMENTS – repentance.
* EYE SALVE (Eye drops) – understanding.

After all, in order to conquer the kingdom of heaven, it is necessary to PURCHASE – that is, to PAY THE PRICE.
