Sons of the Flesh
There is no way of pretending to have the Holy Spirit…
“So then, those who are in the flesh cannot please God. But you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. Now if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he is not His.” Romans 8.8-9
Paul knew that among the new Roman Christians, there were many who had accepted Jesus as their Saviour, but not as their Lord.
That is, they had accepted the Christian faith, but had not surrendered to this faith.
Although they related to the new true Christians, they were still as carnal as before.
This is what has been happening to most believers: they accept Jesus but do not surrender to Him.
This is why they are impeded from receiving the Holy Spirit.
They spend years in the church, obtain vast knowledge of the Word, discover the oracles of God but do not put these into practice. They are children of the flesh.
In his letter to the Roman Christians, the apostle makes it very clear that whoever does not have the Holy Spirit does not belong to Him.
They can even be faithful in the church and follow the religious customs but if they don’t have the Spirit of the Lord Jesus Christ, they don’t belong to Him.
There is no way of pretending to have the Holy Spirit. Their carnalities expose them.
When we are sealed with the Spirit of Jesus, our thoughts, feelings and heart are synchronised with those of Jesus. There is no way one can deceive all of the time.
Paul had his doubts concerning the sincere conversion of the Romans – paraphrasing what he said: You should not be in the flesh, but in Spirit, if, in fact the Spirit of God lives in you.
