Soul and spirit
The first man, Adam, was created by God. The last Adam, Jesus, was born of God. When people are not born of the Holy Spirit, whether Christian or not, they remain simple earthly beings with earthly natures. They are living souls bound by the desires of their deceiving hearts. Their feelings will always speak louder than their reason.
They can be capable and intelligent, but still their choices will always be influenced by feelings, which means they will see negative results.
But when we are given birth by the Holy Spirit our nature becomes spiritual. It is spirit. We lose our earthly, feelings-based nature and take on a heavenly, spiritual one.
That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. John 3:6
Earthly beings are earthly; heavenly ones are heavenly.
There is no middle ground. Either we are earthly or heavenly.
The first man Adam was made a living soul. The last Adam was made a life-giving spirit.
